When discussing cards in poker the card has two defining properties the Rank and the Suit. The cards are valued (have rank) from 2 (the lowest rank) up to the Ace (the highest rank). The 13 ranked cards are repeated in suits that are identified by the symbols Hearts, Spades, Diamonds, and Clubs.

The ranking of poker hands is based on the difficulty in making it. The rankings are as follows:

  • Royal Flush
    The 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace of the same suite. Example: A of Diamonds, K of Diamonds, Q of Diamonds, J of Diamonds, 10 of Diamonds.
  • Straight Flush
    Consists of five sequential cards all in the same suit. Example: 2 of Spades, 3 of Spades, 4 of Spades, 5 of Spades, 6 of Spades. A "wrap around" from the highest to the lowest rank is not allowed so the cards Q, K, A, 2, 3 not a straight flush.
  • Four of a Kind
    Is four cards of the same rank along with a fifth card (the "kicker"). Example: 7 of Diamonds, 7 of Hearts, 7 of Spades, 7 of Clubs, A of Clubs.
  • Full House
    Is a hand of three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank. Example: 8 of Spades, 8 of Clubs, 8 of Diamonds, 4 of Hearts, 4 of Clubs.
  • Flush
    Is a hand of five cards of the same suit. Example: K of Diamonds, 9 of Diamonds, 7 of Diamonds, 5 of Diamonds, 3 of Diamonds. A "wrap around" from the highest to the lowest rank is not allowed so the cards K, A, 2, 3, 4 not a flush.
  • Straight
    A hand of five cards in sequence but not in the same suit. Example: 5 of Hearts, 6 of Diamonds, 7 of Clubs, 8 of Diamonds, 9 of Clubs.
  • Three of a Kind
    Three cards of the same rank and two other cards. Example: 7 of Diamonds, 7 of Clubs, 7 of Hearts, and K of Clubs, 3 of Spades.
  • Two Pair
    Two sets of two cards of the same rank (a pair), with another card (the "kicker"). Example: 8 of Clubs, 8 of Spades (the first pair), 2 of Hearts, 2 of Spades (the second pair), K of Hearts (the "Kicker").
  • One Pair
    Two cards of the same rank (a pair) along with three other cards. Example: 9 of Clubs, 9 of Hearts (a pair), A of Clubs, K of Hearts, 4 of Spades.
  • High Card
    If your hand is none of the above hands you have five random cards. Your best card, highest ranking, in the hand is all you have. Example: Q of Hearts (the high card), 10 of Clubs, 7 of Hearts, 5 of Diamonds, 4 of Spades.
